Things to Do in Sioux Falls Before the Mount Rushmore Fireworks Celebration

Gearing up to attend the monumental fireworks display at Mount Rushmore on July 3^rd? Take some time to explore South Dakota during your journey to the western part of the state. Here are a few activity ideas to do in Sioux Falls as you celebrate America’s 250^th anniversary.

Falls Park

Take in the stunning scenery at the city’s namesake, Falls Park. See the water of the Big Sioux River drop more than 100 feet over the pink Sioux quartzite cliffs from one of the many up-close vantage points or take in a sweeping view of the entire park from the top of the five-story observation tower. Visiting Falls Park and going to the top of the observation tower are all free!

Palisades State Park

For more incredible views, make the quick drive outside of Sioux Falls to Palisades State Park. While there is a small entrance fee to get into the park, the unexpected views are well worth it. The impressive rock formations make you question if you are in the Great Plains.

Arc of Dreams

Be sure to stop and snap a photo of the Arc of Dreams while in Downtown Sioux Falls. This massive stainless-steel sculpture stretches the length of a football field over the Big Sioux River, with a 15-foot gap in the middle which represents the leap of faith dreamers take to see their dreams come true.

Old Courthouse Museum

As we celebrate America’s 250^th, take time to reflect and admire the past at the Old Courthouse Museum, where you will find a variety of exhibits and artifacts about the history of Sioux Falls, including the first four-door vehicle on display, the Fawick Flyer. 

Great Plains Zoo

Experience animal encounters with monkeys, penguins, rhinos, lions, bears, and many more of your favorite animals across the globe at the Great Plains Zoo. Enhance your experience by feeding a giraffe (additional expense) or if you're traveling with young children, let them cool off at the splash pad!

Enjoy a peaceful afternoon or evening on the patio at Big Lost Meadery & Brewery overlooking Lake Lorraine. Order a mouthwatering burger or sandwich from the onsite Ranch & Roost to pair with a glass of Big Lost’s beer or mead. There aren’t many things that are more peaceful than indulging in delicious food and drinks with waterfront views.
