A New Future for a Historic Place 

On July 7, 2026, the City of Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation announced that Sioux Falls will receive $15 million from the Bezos Earth Fund to help transform the former quarry site next to Falls Park. 

The quarry has a long history. Stone from the site helped build major Sioux Falls landmarks, including the Old Courthouse Museum and parts of the state penitentiary. Over time, the area fell into disrepair and stayed that way until the city began restoring land around Falls Park in the 1990s. 

Sioux Falls residents are invited to “Dream Big at The Quarry,” a free, family-friendly celebration Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the future site of The Quarry at The Falls, 1110 N. Weber Ave. The event will kick off the community engagement phase of the project and give residents their first opportunity to learn more about plans for The Quarry at The Falls and share ideas about its future. The celebration will include family-friendly activities, project information and opportunities for community input. The event is free and open to the public, and food vouchers will be available to the first 500 attendees.
