5 Things to Expect at the Sioux Falls Airshow
The Sioux Falls Airshow is making its return July 18-19, at Joe Foss Field and the South Dakota Air National Guard, home of the 114th Fighter Wing. This “Power on the Prairie” attracts approximately 140,000 people over the course of the two-day event. Here’s what you can expect during this year’s event.
Free
The Sioux Falls Airshow is a free event that is held every three years. The organizing committee is made up of all volunteers, with all funds raised going directly to putting on the airshow. The Sioux Falls Airshow is one of the few free airshows in the nation, solely because of the many generous sponsors in the Sioux Falls area. While you can purchase VIP tickets which get you a seat on the show line, general admission is completely free.
Guests are encouraged to park at one of the various lots nearby and take the free shuttle to the gate. Feel free to bring a folding chair to enjoy the show from.
Flight Performances
Throughout both days, you will see various aircraft zipping through the sky like F-16s from the South Dakota Air National Guard and vintage airplanes like the CAF Rise Above P-51C Mustang and more. You may want to consider bringing ear plugs, especially for kids, as some of the fly-bys can be quite loud.
U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds
Headlining the event is the incredibly talented Thunderbirds crew of the U.S. Air Force. These pilots go through rigorous training for many months to prepare for the touring circuit where they perform at airshows and various other events across the country. You will see high-speed fly-bys as well as stunts like diamond formations where the pilots fly with precision to get the wingtips of each aircraft roughly 18 inches apart. Don’t miss the famous “High Bomb Burst” maneuver performed by the Thunderbirds.
Static & Ground Displays
In addition to the flight performances, there will also be over 60 aircraft on static display, offering you a chance to get an up-close view and speak with the air crews. Static display aircraft will include an F-16, AC-47, P-51D Mustang, helicopters belonging to two hospitals, and more.
There will also be approximately 40 ground displays, ranging from Veteran Service Organizations to military and aviation-related exhibits, including higher education institutions with aviation programs.
Discover Aviation Day
Looking for more aviation fun? The Sioux Falls Airshow is hosting its Discover Aviation Day on July 16 at Maverick Air Center. This is a free STEM event with a specific focus on all things aviation. Speak with a wide range of exhibitors to learn about their area of expertise and enjoy hands-on activities that are great for kids.
