Winter is near, but there is no reason for you to not have any fun. There are a variety of upcoming events for you to enjoy with your family and friends. Sioux Falls is prioritizing safety protocols and safe travel by ensuring that guests can attend events in a safe manner. However, if you do not quite feel comfortable attending events at this time there are plenty of outdoor activities to partake in during this winter season.

Winter Wonderland

Get in the holiday spirit by checking out Winter Wonderland at Falls Park. Admire the thousands of holiday lights and decorations that light up the park each night during the holiday season.

Snowflake Festival

This family event will give kids an opportunity to make paper snowflakes, conduct their own science experiments, and more at the Washington Pavilion December 5. Come hungry to enjoy some delicious seasonal treats as well!

Santa Festival

If you cannot make it to the Snowflake Festival then the Washington Pavilion’s Santa Festival on December 19 is certainly one that you will not want to miss. Take part in activities such as decorating a wreath, Christmas tree, and gingerbread cookies, sing carols, and visit with Santa Claus!

Winter Activities

Great Bear Ski Valley

Once the temperatures start to drop the crew at Great Bear Ski Valley will begin grooming the hills for all of your favorite activities on the snow. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing on those perfect winter days. Bring your own equipment or rent some equipment from their wide selection.

Ice Skating

Skate your way across the ice at several different Sioux Falls ice rinks. Bring the whole family or just bring your significant other for a relaxing activity. No need to worry if you do not own any skates because you can rent some from the warming houses onsite. The city ice rinks are scheduled to open for the season December 18, weather permitting.

Cross-Country Skiing or Snowshoeing

If you have never gone cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, we highly recommend that you give it a try! Explore the trails at the Outdoor Campus as you walk across the snow enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. The Outdoor Campus has the necessary equipment available for you to rent.

Butterfly House & Aquarium

Create a memorable experience with a stop at the Butterfly House & Aquarium. Walk amongst hundreds of butterflies in this indoor oasis and then explore marine life in the aquarium. You may even be lucky enough to have a butterfly land on you!

Midco Aquatic Center

Warm up indoors at the Midco Aquatic Center where several different pools are open year-round. This water complex features an Olympic size pool, recreational pool, water slide, lily pad crossing, and more.
